LAVENDER & LAUNDRY
Romans most
likely gave it the Latin Genus or family root name, Lavendula sp.
It is believed the word lavender comes from the Latin "lavare"
which means to wash, and also it may be derived from livendula- livid or
bluish.
An entry in
the 1889 Century Unabridged Dictionary, 12th to 15th Century Middle
English describes washer women as lavanders or lavenders; to lavender
meant to launder, and lavatories were stone-floored rooms for washing clothes.
The washing
women known as "lavenders" and used lavender to scent drawers and
dried the laundry on lavender bushes. The lavender the plant, was kept
fabrics fresh-smelling.
In
Tudor England lavender was planted outside the laundry room (lavatories) and
linens and clothing were laid over the plants to dry while absorbing the fresh
odor of lavender. Clothing and bedding rinsed in lavender water not
only smelled fresh, but repelled moths too.
LAVENDER & LINENS
In Medieval & Renaissance times,
street vendors sold bunches of lavender to place in linen closets as a moth
repellent.
Victorian
ladies stuffed lavender bags between sheets in linen presses. Sachets
of lavender stored with linen will perfume it and keep the cupboards free of
moths and other insects.
Lavender or even roses are typically used more for
bedding and clothing than for table linens. It makes sense that the
pleasant but strong odors would interfere with the palate.
HOUSEHOLD LAVENDER USES
In
ancient times lavender was used for perfume by the Egyptians, Phoenicians, and
peoples of Arabia.
In Europe in
Medieval and Renaissance times, lavender was used as a disinfectant and
deodorant, when it was scattered over the castle floors and in sick
rooms.
Tudor
ladies of the manor mixed lavender flowers with beeswax to make furniture
polish and found it useful in repelling insects.
In Victorian
times, lavender was very fashionable among the ladies of London. Fresh
lavender was dried, placed in muslin bags for wardrobes. It was used for
washing both furniture and walls. Lavender was used to repel inspects,
treat lice, as a perfume and a potpourri, in furniture polish and soap and as a
general cure-all.
Even the
ancients knew lavenders strong scent had insect repellent effects.
Typically it will keep moths, fleas and lice away.
